Dry needling is a skilled intervention performed by a healthcare provider to treat musculoskeletal pain and movement dysfunction. This procedure is typically used as part of a comprehensive pain management plan that may include corrective exercise, stretching, massage, myofascial release, or joint mobilization. The benefits of dry needling include decreased muscle tightness, increased blood flow, and reduced local and referred pain. The thin, sterile needles used in this technique do not contain medication—hence the term “dry.” Nothing is injected into the body. This differs from trigger point injections, which contain medication and are performed by a physician. All programs fall under this treatment approach.
